The Offering of the Six Devas

Previously I posted “Big Boy”, a depiction of the Big Buddha in Hong Kong.  This time I’ve got one of the two paintings I’ve done of the figures attending to the Big Guy.

The Tian Tan Buddha in Hong Kong is surrounded by 6 statues known as “The Offering of the Six Devas”  Each of these figures are posed presenting a different offering to Bhudda.  The figure in this painting is making the offering of fruit, while the others offer flowers, a lamp, incense, ointment, fruit and music.  These represent the virtues charity, morality, patience, seal, meditation and wisdom.

Stay tuned for the companion piece.

“Big Boy” is a painting of the Tian Tan Buddha, locally know as the Big Buddhda.  The Big Buddha is a 34m seated outdoor bronze statue, located a Ngong Ping, Lanau Island, in Hong Kong.

Right hand raised, left hand resting in his lap, and seated on a lotus flower atop Muk Yue Shan, he can reached by making the climb of 268 steps.

Tools of the Trade Continued…

Continuing on the theme of Tools of the Trade, let’s talk about a category that isn’t often associated with art- Safety Equipment!

Although I try not think about it too much, the reality is that spray paint fumes contain lots of toxic chemicals.  Getting technical, they contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as Acetone, Xylene and Toluene.  It is for this reason that spraying should be done in a well-ventilated area.

Another measure of defense against breathing too much of the stuff is a good quality respirator, or mask.  I personally use a  3M job whenever I’m spraying.

Looking at the picture below, you can see how much of the bad stuff those little filters keep out.  I’m glad those aren’t my lungs!

Tools of the Trade

Hey all,

Since I’m waiting for a particular shade of my favourite paint to get back in stock at the fine folks at Above Ground Art Supplies in T.O., I figured I might as well write a little something about my Weapon of Choice-Montana Spray Paints.

Montana Gold and Black are by far the easiest spraying, quickest drying paints I’ve used.  But for me, the main selling point is the huge array of colours they have.  Just look at this colour chart:

For a guy like me who often likes to create work based on just one colour, this breakdown into so many shades is fantastic.
